Forever Young Ministry

On May 20, 2011, Rev. Cornelius Brown called the senior members of our church together to meet and discuss a Senior Ministry. After some discussion, the name, Forever Young Senior Ministry was adopted as the official name of the fellowship. The following officers were elected:

Chairperson Deacon Erica James
Vice Chairperson Sister Maggi Green
Secretary Deacon Claudette Winston
Treasurer Sister Lubertha Magruder
Correspondence Secretary Deacon Jean Richardson
Trip & Tour Director Sister Joan Rollins

The Fellowship was designed to serve the needs of our Senior members offering opportunities not only for encouraging spiritual growth, but also for a total well-being.

The Fellowship enjoyed many activities and events through the years, such as:
Arts & Crafts, Outdoor Flea Market, Group Outing, First Annual Senior Day and Senior Choir, Prepared & delivered Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets to the sick and shut-in and the annual Christmas Celebration with the Fort Greene Seniors.

Members of the Forever Young Seniors, helped in the growth of our Church and Community throughout the years by serving in various capacities such as: Singers, Ushers, Teachers, Elders, Deacons, Trustees, Workers in our Food Pantry program and Financial Contributors. It was stated by a member, “As Seniors, we are not just takers of the good things of life. We are still able to use our talents and gifts for the growth of our Church, Community and God’s kingdom.”

Once again, the Forever Young Seniors used their gifts and talents and successfully raised over $6,000 that helped support and complete our elevator lift project. This lift now allows easy access to our Fellowship Hall on the lower level of our building.

Again, this year, a call went out to the seniors of our congregation asking them to step up and participate in our Senior Day Choir. The voices you hear today are a result of that effort. As Seniors we are blessed and excited to have lived to see and able to cast our vote for an African American candidate for President. In January 2009, we witnessed the swearing in of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th President of the United States.

In July, 2014 two of our Seniors reached a great milestone in their life. Sister Mary Glenn celebrated her 105th birthday and Sister Georgia Hughes celebrated her 102nd birthday. Both were faithful members to this Church as well as the Senior Ministry. With great joy there is also great sorrow, as we pause to offer a silent prayer in honor of the Seniors who have gone home to be with the Lord, let us also pray for those Seniors who are sick & shut-in and those who are unable to be with us today.

As “Pillars of the Church” today we celebrate the lives and contributions of Seniors not only here at Stuyvesant, but Seniors all over the world. We are soldiers in the army of the Lord and we give honor and glory to Him who keeps us marching day by day. For this we say to God, Glory, Glory, Hallelujah, your Seniors are marching on!
